Anniversary on Kangaroo Island

For our first year anniversary we set off for a weekend on Kangaroo Island

Kangaroo Island Map

The island is about 60 miles long by 30 miles wide and its about a 45 minute ferry ride over from the mainland

We stayed in Kingscote at the Ozone hotel on the seafront

On saturday morning we headed out and got to see some birds of prey at Raptor Domain

Here is Caroline with a Casper the friendly barn owl and Kessie the Kestrel

and Mick with Clancy the kookaburra and Wally the Tawny Frogmouth who was just a bit thick

then is was onto the far end of the island and the Remarkable rocks

and then we went to see the NZ fur seals at Admiral's Arch

The weather started to turn at this point and it started to get dark and to top it all we realised we were running out of petrol - we glided down the hills to get to the petrol station at the Wilderness Retreat

The drive back across the island was amazing as the wildlife came out in the dark and we had to be careful not to hit the kangaroos bounding across the road!!!

In the evening we went on a tour ot see the fairy penguins returning from the sea to their nests but we only saw a few as a seal had spooked the penguins in the bay

On the Sunday we headed to a couple of wineries, the Island Beehive and onto Little Sahara for some sand boarding but the weather got the better of us but Mick still decided to roll down the dunes

We finally headed to Penneshaw to catch the ferry but took a walk along the beach front to see if we could see any penguins - we got lucky and found a nesting couple and it cost us nothing!

What a cracking way to spend our anniversary
